The Scattered Life Collective is on hiatus while our host, Cynthia Lee, focuses her energy on caring for her mom. I'm sure that any positive vibes that you can send her way would be appreciated. In the mean time, I plan to carry on with Friday Footnotes. I enjoy putting them together and I find that it's a useful practice to revisit my week and keep a record of my doings - sometimes it's in the minutiae that we discover the most about ourselves.
Current time: 5:46 a.m.
Out the window: The early morning chirpy birds are twittering away. Occasionally when I hear them I'm reminded of my younger days when I would hear them as I was going to bed rather than as I'm getting up like I do now.
On the menu: Not sure, but I'm thinking of something involving basil. I need to harvest my first crop.

Reading: I just picked this one up at the library yesterday from the New & Noted section - The Sun and Other Stars by Brigid Pasulka. I like to do that at the library - choose books that I know nothing about until I read the cover. Sometimes I choose duds, but often I discover gems that I would otherwise not have known about.
The blurb that drew me in: "Set in a seaside village on the Italian Riviera, this irresistible new novel by PEN/Hemingway Award-winner Brigid Pasulka tells the story of a widowed butcher and his son, whose losses are transformed into hope."

Watching: The second season of Orange is the New Black comes out on Netflix today, so I decided it was about time I checked out the first season. I've only watched one episode, but so far I'm not as impressed as I thought I might be. For one thing, three of the characters are played by actors I don't really care for - Jason Biggs, Laura Prepon and Kate Mulgrew. Also, I have a weird habit of judging actors based on how they eat and cry on camera, and the lead in this show, Taylor Schilling, is NOT a good crier - no actual tears, overdone facial expressions - she doesn't make the cut. I am still a bit curious though, and it's not fair to judge a show on one episode, so I'll probably stick with it a while longer.
Listening: Budapest, by English singer/songwriter George Ezra. I saw this song recommended on Twitter by someone I respect, and I was not disappointed. It's a catchy little tune.
Good stuff:
- Visiting with my brother and his family, here for the weekend to celebrate my mom's birthday.
- Watching my brother deal with two unruly teenagers, considering what a pain in the butt he was at that age.
- Rediscovering the gastronomical delight that is schmoo torte.
- Finishing a long overdue email to a friend while sitting with my feet up under an umbrella on my back deck, sipping iced coffee and drinking in the smell of my jasmine plant and the sounds of the neighbourhood.
- Drawing. I'm still enamoured with the book 20 Ways to Draw a Cat. Here's a sample of some of my doodles. I know they're not much, but for someone who has always drawn at the level of stick figures, I'm still amazed that I can draw things that are actually identifiable as animals! The hardest thing to get right? The eyes.
